Nominate your Design Awards!

Released on 28 June 2005

Do you have a favourite building in South Norfolk which you would like to see recognised and celebrated? Something innovative, sustainable or sensitive to its surroundings?

If so, don’t keep it to yourself!

South Norfolk Council this week launched its fifth annual Design Awards competition, and is calling on people to send in their nominations for buildings completed on site since January 2003 which deserve recognition.

The awards were established to promote and raise awareness of the contribution that good design can make to the quality of our built environment, and this year two new categories have been added, to reflect the importance of conservation and landscape design.

Cllr Tim East, Design Champion for South Norfolk Council and innovator of the Awards concept, said:

"These awards play an important role in our Council’s strategy to promote and raise awareness of the value of good design. You don’t have to live or work in South Norfolk to have your say, you just need to have been inspired or impressed by a recent building or landscape here."

David Edleston, South Norfolk Council’s Conservation & Design Architect, added:

"Design is a part of everybody’s daily lives, and it can have an enormous effect on us. We are interested in nominations for inspiring buildings and landscapes, but also schemes which restore, conserve or fit in harmoniously with their environment and communities. Our assessment panel will be looking for designs which respect and enhance their setting, and in particular for schemes which demonstrate an innovative approach."

Entry criteria

- For the first time this year there are four award categories:

A. New building - this can include any individual building, or a group of buildings on a single site.

B. Extension to an existing building.

C. Conservation - repair, restoration or conversion of an existing building.

D. Landscape Design - a planting/hard landscape scheme either in association with a new development or a stand alone project e.g. enhancement of a public open space, play area etc.

- Works must have been completed on site since January 2003.

- Entries may be submitted by owners, clients, architects, designers, contractors, manufacturers, Parish Councils, amenity societies or any member of the public.

- There is no limit to the number of entries which may be submitted from any one source, but in all cases the consent of the owner must be obtained prior to making the nomination.

- Entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form and supported by photographs and/or drawings, preferably showing the site before and after completion as appropriate.

- The awards will be made in October 2005.

All nominations must be returned by Tuesday 30th August 2005. For an entry form, contact David Edleston:
