300 year old Oak tree in the spotlight
Released on 16 May 2005
A 300-year-old Oak tree in Caistor St Edmund has been chosen as this year’s South Norfolk Council Chairman’s Tree.
This is the fourth tree the council has designated as a Chairman’s tree – a scheme that celebrates the important trees of the district, which contribute to its landscape and heritage.
Robin Taylor, South Norfolk Council's Landscape Officer explained why the scheme was created:
"Veteran trees are special because of their age and size and important because they provide a habitat for wildlife such as birds, mammals, invertebrates and fungi. Such trees are recognised nationally as an integral part of our countryside's heritage. I believe they merit the same care and protection afforded to historic buildings and antiques."
Councillor Mrs Vera Alexander who steps down as South Norfolk’s Chairman on 16 May said:
“I am pleased that the Oak has been selected as my Chairman’s Tree. We all value the contribution that trees make to the landscape of South Norfolk, which has many examples of similar fine trees."
The Oak is on land owned by local farmer and conservationist Chris Skinner. He said that the tree has been owned by his family for many years and has been an important landmark in his family’s life:
"My uncle tells of how he courted my aunt under the unusually-exposed roots! The tree is one of Norfolk's finest Oaks and I consider myself fortunate to own such a special tree and to be its present custodian. Its location near to the Parish Church of Caistor St Edmund means that it has been witness to many events over the years, especially as a track leading to the Church used to pass very close to the tree. I am sure that if it could, this Oak could tell many stories of the centuries past."
