Threat of bankruptcy achieves results
Released on 12 May 2005
South Norfolk Council started bankruptcy proceedings against a resident who had persistently refused to pay council tax - they were only halted when the person agreed to pay the £5,700 owed.
Tanya Tilford, Head of Revenues at South Norfolk Council said the resident agreed to pay just before the hearing:
“It is only a few months ago that we decided to use bankruptcy proceedings against those who have the assets, but refuse to pay council tax or business rates - and the policy is already showing results.
“As well as this case, we are pursuing others and are confident that the threat of bankruptcy will make people re-think their refusal to pay.
“We are not aiming this at those who cannot pay, but only those who have the money, and are simply abusing the system.”
Tanya said she urged those who could not afford their payments to get in touch:
“We would only ever use bankruptcy proceedings against those who deliberately will not pay us. For those who are struggling to pay their council tax or business rates, we are here to help.”
