Council Leader and Deputy Leader Step Down

Richard Carden, Leader of South Norfolk Council and John Halliday, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for The Economy, have announced that they are intending to step down from their current positions at the council’s annual meeting on May 16.

The council’s ruling Liberal Democrat group have begun the process of electing successors. These will be announced just before the annual meeting.

Councillor Carden and Councillor Halliday have been friends and political colleagues for 25 years. They have worked together at South Norfolk Council for ten years.

Councillor Carden said:

“After leading the council for seven years I have decided to step down. I will not be standing for re-election in two years time and, subject to the agreement of my colleagues, I would like to serve as Chairman of the council before retiring. I am confident that my group will have no difficulty in replacing me.”

Councillor Halliday said:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the council’s Cabinet and as Deputy Leader. My portfolio for the district’s Economy has been a source of great satisfaction over the years. It has been very fulfilling to be part of the council’s efforts to encourage new business and sustain our existing ones, which have such a direct impact on the quality of people’s lives.

“However with a wealth of talent in our group, I feel it is time that residents have the benefit of fresh ideas.”
