Council fire-fighters score a double first
Released on 07 March 2005
Two officers at South Norfolk Council have scored a double first and qualified as retained fire-fighters.
Benefits Officer Steph Whyte who works in the Revenue Services team and Licensing Officer Julia Tovee-Galey who works in Democratic Services team are now fully qualified retained fire-fighters, attached to the station at Long Stratton.
As a result of their success, there are now 19 women fire-fighters in Norfolk, both full time and retained. To join their ranks, Julia and Steph had to pass several assessments, at six, 12, 18 and 21 months, taking written exams and going through practical drills.
They were tested on their knowledge and skills on all of the equipment the fire service carries, as well as the fire service procedures. The drills included safe use and handling of hydraulic rescue equipment, used for dealing with road traffic accidents, casualty care, putting up ladders and staffing the pumps. During the drills, they faced tough questioning.
Steph and Julia’s success means the council now has four retained fire-fighters on the staff.
Julia said:
“It’s been a tough two years but one of the most enjoyable, challenging and rewarding times. We could not have achieved the levels required without the support of our employers at South Norfolk Council, and the Norfolk Fire Service.
“We really enjoy the job because it enables us to assist those in need, in the community where we live and work.”
Steph said:
“If there is anyone out there with the personality that enjoys interacting in a team and who is willing to learn and help in their community, we recommend you get in touch with the fire service in your area. And especially if you are a woman, and you want a challenge – make the move and give it a go!”
Fire Crew Manager and the Council’s Assistant Direct Services Manager, Kelly Lunness said:
"Steph and Julia are valued members of the station and they have both done really well during their probation training. I don’t think people understand just how much commitment you have to give to become a retained fire-fighter, while holding down a job.
“When your emergency bleeper goes off, you have no idea of where, whom and what you are about to attend. It’s vital you go, and go fast if you want to save lives.
“Both the Council and Long Stratton Fire Station are proud of Julia and Steph’s achievement. For them, it’s just the beginning - the training never stops."
