Keeping out the criminals this Christmas
Released on 17 December 2004
South Norfolk Crime Reduction Partnership (CDRP) has announced a reduction in domestic burglary and vehicle crime in South Norfolk over the last year.
Cllr Philip Waltham, Cabinet Member responsible for Safer Communities welcomed the news, but urged residents not to become complacent:
“The figures are positive – domestic burglary is down 27% and vehicle crime is down 14%. This is good news for the people of South Norfolk, and the CDRP should be congratulated on their hard work. These crimes are the ones our residents tell us they are most concerned about and I hope the new figures boost their confidence and help reduce their fears.
“With Christmas approaching, it is important for people to know that almost half the domestic burglaries committed in this period of time, were “walk-in burglaries.” These happen when we leave our doors or windows open – practically inviting burglars into our homes.”
Cllr Jill Caldwell, Chair of the CDRP, urged people to be watchful over the coming weeks:
“At Christmas, some of us tend to be more relaxed about security at home and in our cars, often leaving windows, doors and car boots unlocked. Criminals are always on the look out for opportunities to ply their trade – and they have no regard for Christmas Spirit. It’s the time of year when people buy expensive items as presents and we don’t want anyone’s Christmas to be spoilt in this way.
“We are doing well in the battle against domestic burglary and vehicle crime. With your help, we can keep the criminals out this Christmas.”
So far, almost 3,500 South Norfolk residents have responded to the CDRP Crime Survey, which went out in the council’s Link magazine three weeks ago. The date for responses was set at today, Friday 10 December, but the council is encouraging residents to keep the responses coming in.
