Barn owl sighting in South Norfolk

South Norfolk Council Countryside Ranger, Steve Hammond, has spotted a Barn Owl roosting in a specially prepared owl box in the district.

“It’s really good news,” he said, “because the species is under threat, with dwindling numbers across the country. They have become uncommon here because of a decrease in the number of traditional barns and older trees, in which they used to make their homes. “

In the last few months the Countryside team has put up owl boxes on a number of sites. It is part of a joint project with the Upper Waveney Countryside Partnership, Thornham Walks and Gipping Valley projects.

“We are all hoping to encourage Barn Owls to nest in the district. We have sited the owl boxes with the birds’ safety in mind. They are away from any major roads and in areas that offer good hunting and feeding opportunities.

“This box has been in place for less than six weeks – and now it appears that an owl has chosen to roost in it. Barn owls are regular in their habits, and once they have decided where to roost, come back to the same site every day. We will be watching and waiting to see if there are any developments over the next few months and if the owl really has ‘moved in!”

The latest survey showed there are only 5,000 pairs across the country – a decline of between 20 - 50% over the last 20 years.
