Preparing to plant for Tree Week

Released on 23 November 2004

South Norfolk Council’s Tree Week celebrations are about to begin, with Tree Wardens from across the district gathering to collect new trees to plant.

This year twenty-seven parishes will be involved including Wicklewood, Winfarthing and Wortwell. The parish Tree Wardens will come and pick up 450 trees from the council on November 26, ready for a weekend of planting!

South Norfolk Council Landscape Officer, Robin Taylor, said:

“This is the 30th National Tree Week – the Tree Council’s festival to mark the start of the tree planting season. It’s a nationwide celebration of trees and woods and we are delighted to be participating again.

“It’s the fifth time we’ve taken part in the event which helps us to raise awareness of trees and hedges in our environment, and ensures there is a good stock of new plants for future generations to enjoy.

“By the end of this year’s event the wardens will have planted and maintained 3,000 new trees and over 7 kilometres of hedgerows, across sixty-one South Norfolk parishes.”

Tina Gray, South Norfolk Council’s Assistant Landscape Officer who co-ordinates Tree Week in the district said:

“I work closely with the Tree Wardens to ensure the community gets the maximum visual and ecological benefits from the new planting and that the species are appropriate for their locations.

“In South Norfolk we have ninety Tree Wardens, who work hard to preserve and protect the plants throughout the year. Their commitment helps to make Tree Week such a success.”

There are vacancies for volunteer Tree Wardens in some of South Norfolk’s parishes. If you would like to find out more, and possibly get involved with next year’s National Tree Week, please contact Robin or Tina directly on 01508 533813.
