Training to tackle Anti Social Behaviour

Released on 29 October 2004

South Norfolk Council is offering a training day on Friday October 29, organised by the South Norfolk Crime Reduction Partnership, for those involved with tackling anti-social behaviour.

The delegates will have the opportunity to find out about some of the practical ways that teams are working to beat the problem.

Carolyn James, South Norfolk Council’s Neighbourhood Safety Co-ordinator said:

“The emphasis will be on how we can make the best use of the powers we have recently acquired in the Anti Social Behaviour Act 2003, for dealing with it as effectively as possible.

“Police officers from Diss and Wymondham, and representatives from the Youth Offending Team, Environmental Services, Housing Services, Housing Associations and the licensed trade are joining us for the day.

“The intention is that we will share knowledge and learn from each other.

It’s an issue that is often in the news, and in my role I am dealing with cases every day.

“I believe by talking to communities, gathering the evidence from them and using preventative measures, we can keep this bad behaviour to a minimum in South Norfolk. That is why we are anxious to share our working practices, particularly our use of Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs).

“We have issued a number of ABCs and they do appear to have had a positive effect on the offenders and the community. For us it’s about prevention and early intervention and, so far, we have not had to issue any Anti Social Behaviour Orders.”

The themes for the one-day workshop are:

- How to engage with communities through problem solving, - Bringing together and sharing information with partners, - Acceptable Behaviour Contracts - Perception of young people and anti-social behaviour.

If you want to report anti-social behaviour that is affecting your life, call your local police or contact Carolyn James, on 01508 533670.
