Planting crocuses for Breakthrough Breast Cancer campaign
Released on 27 October 2004
South Norfolk Council is joining forces again with Breakthrough Breast Cancer, in its campaign to Cover Britain in Crocuses.
Council Caretaker Stuart Pointin (pictured) has been planting hundreds of the bulbs in the grounds of South Norfolk House.
“It’s backbreaking work - but it’s worth it,” he said!
And as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month the council is also hosting an hour-long presentation on Thursday, giving staff vital information about the disease.
On Friday staff are being invited to wear something pink, in solidarity with the Wear it Pink campaign whose proceeds also go to breast cancer research.
Karin Davies, Human Resources Manager, South Norfolk Council said:
“Many of our employees' lives have been personally affected by breast cancer and anything we can do to raise awareness and encourage people to visit their GP if they suspect a problem, is important to us.
“We also work closely with health agencies to try and ensure this message is heard by all members of the community.
“Breakthrough Breast Cancer is committed to fighting breast cancer through research and education and it needs to raise £10m each year to fund its work. We are proud to be involved in this small way.”
Breakthrough Breast Cancer says it uses the crocus as part of its logo because:
"The crocus is planted in the winter and survives through the cold and bleak season, to be one of the first flowers to blossom in the spring. It is a message of hope for sufferers that the disease can be beaten."
