First steps for countryside conservation volunteers

Released on 21 October 2004

On Thursday October 28, South Norfolk Council is holding an inaugural meeting for a group of new volunteer Wildlife Wardens.

Mike Bentley, Countryside and Heritage Manager, South Norfolk council said:

“This is the first chance for our new band of volunteers to get together. We’ll be explaining their role and introducing them to the potential opportunities for further meetings, lectures and training days. It’s also a great opportunity for like-minded people to meet and swap ideas about countryside conservation.

“Steve Hammond, our Countryside Ranger will talk to them about the sites we manage. Steve Henson from Norfolk Wildlife Trust will share his expert knowledge of otters and water voles. We still have a population of otters and water voles in South Norfolk and the wardens will need to know how to spot them so they can assist in our drive to help them survive. There will also be a talk on Fenland Management and plenty of time to ask questions.

“We are all really looking forward to this event. It’s always exciting to get a new team on board, and we hope it won’t be too long before they realise how integral they are to wildlife conservation in South Norfolk.”

To find out more about the work of the countryside team and how to become a wildlife warden, call Steve Hammond on 01508 533947.
