This weekend saw the opening of South Norfolk Council’s Waterside Weekends – a series of events offering music, dance, drama and the arts to visitors and residents on the Southern Broads.

Heidi Hadley, Cultural Regeneration Manager, South Norfolk Council said:

“More than 100 people danced, clapped and joined in with the telling of the musical Tudor tale of Sir Francis Drake’s voyage of discovery.

“Drake’s Progress was performed by expert early musicians and storytellers ‘Sirinu.’ The audience was introduced to an array of Tudor instruments that most of them had never seen or heard before – including a dulcimer, crumhorn, tabor and mbira.

“The show was performed on South Norfolk Council’s unique mobile bandstand which is touring across the district until August 22.

“And judging by the reaction we got from people at Saturday’s event, the Waterside Weekends look likely to be a big hit. We are really excited about the whole season, which will bring such high quality arts into the area.

“The next event is at Rockland St Mary Staithe on July 11 from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, and this time the Sprowston Brass Band will be taking to the bandstand.

“Below is the timetable of events - everyone is invited and all the events are free!”
