Councillors cheer and applaud as Henman victory is announced

Released on 29 June 2004

South Norfolk Councillors last night cheered and applauded as news came through of Tim Henman’s victory over Mark Philippoussis in the fourth round at Wimbledon. Full Council had just begun a second hour of intense debate on a heavy agenda of items ranging from plans for a new engineering centre of excellence in South Norfolk and concerns over vandalism in Diss to the district community strategy and the council’s corporate plan.

Councillor Tim East, who represents Old Costessey, got the news that Henman was through to the quarter finals after a thrilling three sets to one victory.

Tennis fan Councillor East passed a note giving the scores through to Chairman Vera Alexander who broke from the business for a moment to make the announcement, to cheers and applause from all sides. Then it was back to business.

Councillor East said:

“All of us missed the match, because quite properly we had to be at Full Council representing our residents and the community of South Norfolk. Having said that, it was great to hear the news announced by the chairman."
