Accessibility for all at play area
Released on 08 June 2004
The first of our play areas to be fully compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act has just opened. The site in Roydon, now has a range of equipment providing accessibility, inclusivity and play value for everyone.
Mike Bentley, Countryside and Heritage Manager said:
"We are delighted that the Roydon site is the first to be finished. It was poorly equipped when we had adopted it, but now offers equipment that was selected for our objectives of inclusivity and play value. That means ensuring disabled children do not have separate equipment and that the equipment can be played on and enjoyed by able-bodied and disabled children equally."
South Norfolk Council is working on five of its play areas to bring them up to the same standard – so by the end of October, all South Norfolk residents should be within a short drive of a compliant site.
"Accessibility is paramount to us on all the sites, which can be reached along multi-ability paths from parking spaces. The access points to the play areas will be widened and their surfaces improved, and once in the area there is wheelchair access to all the equipment, " said Mike.
Mike Bentley is proud of the achievement of his team in bringing Roydon, and the other play areas, up to standard. He said:
"This will put us in the forefront of local authority response to the Disability Discrimination Act within play areas."
