Demand for postal votes up by 50 per cent

Released on 08 June 2004

South Norfolk residents have requested around 9,000 postal votes for this year's European elections – 50% more than last year's local election.

Alex Evans, Electoral Services Manager said:

"Despite the negative publicity in other parts of the country, our residents are telling us they are happy to post their votes to us for this election. There appears to be a strong interest in the European election and we are hoping for an increase in turnout.

We'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone with a postal vote, that they need to return their vote by 10pm on June 10. They can either post them in time, or bring them to any of our 112 polling stations across the district.

For those who are intending to come in to vote in person, the polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm as usual. The results should be known by 9.30pm on Sunday 13 June 2004."

Alex Evans added the Electoral Services team is busy preparing for June 10:

"It's always a hectic time, but one we look forward to. After all, voting is the root of democracy."
