No wasted effort as students compete to design logo
Released on 21 April 2004
When more than 60 students entered a design-a-logo competition, for South Norfolk Council’s recycling scheme Waste Knot, the teachers decided the standard of the entries was so high, they would put them all on display.
Diss High School’s Waste Knot Logo Designs Exhibition, runs from April 27th to May 1st between 8am to 5pm at the Old Stables, in Diss.
On Tuesday April 27, the entries will be judged by a panel consisting of Council Chairman Mrs Vera Alexander, Diss Councillor John Proudlove and Waste Knot’s Project Manager Jennifer Parkhouse, who will decide which design will become Waste Knot’s logo.
Council Chairman Mrs Vera Alexander says the judging will be difficult, with so many strong designs to chose from:
“I think it will be a hard task to find one winner, but I know what I am looking for - an eye-catching logo which reinforces the message that recycling is vital if we want to minimise waste in the future.”
Head teacher of Diss High School, Stuart Ballantyne, was delighted by the standard of the entries, he said:
“It seems to me that this whole project has been “educational” in the best sense: it has demanded high standards of accuracy, good skills and an appreciation of one of the key issues facing the consumer society today – recycling. I am very proud of my students.”
Waste Knot is a project which aims to set up a rural recycling scheme for used furniture. Mark Allen, South Norfolk Council Direct Services Manager explained how it will work:
“Often people throw out used furniture when they replace it – but this is really a waste when that sofa can be repaired, re-upholstered and made as good a new. When Waste Knot is up and running, people will be able to let us know about their unwanted goods - volunteers will come and collect them, take them away, test them, do any repairs and then deliver them to low income families who can buy them at a reasonable cost. It’s real grass roots recycling - and one wins. At this stage we are looking for volunteers to help us put everything in place.“
He added:
“Waste Knot is a positive initiative and the logo will help to remind people of the work it does. Waste Knot has obviously captured the students’ imagination. Thank you to all those who took part. The winner’s logo will be added to all Waste Knot’s publicity material, letters, website and vehicles - it certainly won’t be a waste!”
