Design Award winners announced

Released on 18 December 2003

The overall winner of the Design Awards 2003 in the Existing Build Category is the new extension to Chauffeur's Cottage in Chedgrave (pictured right). Today (December 17th) at a ceremony at South Norfolk House, Council Chairman the Rev. Clive Hudson made presentations to all the winners. (See below for details)

David Edleston, the Conservation and Design Architect, South Norfolk Council says:

“The scheme was created to help encourage high quality building design across the district. The award recognises design excellence and raises awareness of the contribution good design can make to the quality of the built environment.”

There were two award categories:

Work to an existing building such as an extension, conversion or restoration and design of a new building or development – comprising any individual building or a group of buildings on a single site.

In this, the third annual Design Awards, Mr Edleston says the entries were very strong: “Once again the standard of the schemes nominated for this year's awards was high. After very careful consideration, the assessment panel agreed to give the award for the extension of Chauffeur's Cottage at Chedgrave because of the way in which a contemporary design has been successfully incorporated into a traditional context and because of the quality of attention given to the details, such as the joinery and glazed junctions between the old and the new.'
