New floodlit tennis courts ready for action

Released on 30 October 2003

After three years of concerted effort by Wymondham Tennis Club, with the support of South Norfolk Council, Wymondham Town Council and the Lawn Tennis Association, three new floodlit tennis courts are now complete and ready for action.

The courts, at Ketts Park in Wymondham, were formally opened by the President of the Norfolk Lawn Tennis Association, Mr Geoffrey Copeman CBE, on Wednesday 29 October.

The club successfully attracted the following grants and loans to fund the new courts:

Lawn Tennis Association Loan £19,000 (interest free) Grant £20,000

South Norfolk Council added an additional grant of £29,508 and Wymondham Town Council agreed a grant for the balance of the work, up to £30,000

Club Chairman Tony Hockaday said:

“Club members and the general public can now look forward to playing tennis all the year round under floodlights on modern, high quality courts; this should lead to a better standard and more enjoyable tennis for both social and competitive players.”

South Norfolk Council’s Project Support Services team – Meryl Harding and Sue Boyd – worked with the club to help them secure the funding and to create a strong foundation for the future. They also helped the club to develop its constitution and its Sports Development Plan, assisting with such issues as equal opportunities, health and safety and child protection. The Plan sets out the club’s goals over the next five years and includes policies such as involving young people, coaching schemes and attracting new members.

Sue Boyd congratulated the club and said:

"It is almost a year to the day (1st November 2002) that I first visited Wymondham Tennis Club. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with a very professional committee who have made my 'first project' seem effortless".

The club is keen to attract new players of all ages, to continue participating in the local tennis leagues including the Norfolk Veterans League.
