Celestial Arts highlight the dark skies of South Norfolk

Released on 27 October 2003

As part of its Celestial Festival, South Norfolk Council has collaborated with the Cinnamon Gallery in Raveningham to create a mixed media exhibition, featuring the work of Norfolk artists and makers responding to the theme of the sky.

Running until Sunday November 23rd, the exhibition celebrates the special qualities of the dark skies of South Norfolk.

Harriet Johnson Celestial Festival Events Assistant, South Norfolk Council says:

“For thousands of years mankind has looked to the Heavens for inspiration. The stars have moulded our cultures, our faiths and for many, guided our future.

But now, in this age of convenience, our need for light, safety and security is leading us to destroy one of the most beautiful parts of our environment. We should all be able to look up and see the stars, the planets, our Milky Way, but over the last 40 years, millions of lights have obscured the night sky from view for people living in towns and cities.

Now this light-pollution, or Sky-Glow, is encroaching on our countryside and we are in danger of losing the last truly dark places in our country.”

The exhibition includes work by the following artists: Mick Arnold, Martin Battye, Richard Defreeston, Fiona French, Mark Goldsworthy, Helen Howe, Teri Lockton, Jane Miller, Jaqueline Pooley, Jenny Press, Sue Scheller, Richard Simmonds, Taos and Adrian Woodard.

The exhibition includes stained glass, textiles, sculpture, painting, ceramics and illustrations as well as an intricate orrery – a clockwork planetarium showing the motion of the celestial bodies in the solar system.

The image enclosed is called The Moon Lady and was created by Taos. It is a wearable velvet art collaboration, between Jane Elizabeth Miller & Janis Pegrum. This is their first exhibition as a partnership - they were inspired to come together in response to the Celestial Festival.

The exhibition is open daily until November 23rd from 11am – 6pm at the Cinnamon Gallery, Raveningham Centre, Raveningham. 01508 548441
