Youngsters’ talent reaches a Crescendo
Released on 23 January 2012
I have been incredibly impressed by the young people’s talent and am delighted we can help them develop their potential by giving them this opportunity to work alongside such highly acclaimed musicians.
Deputy Leader Councillor Martin Wilby
Schoolchildren from South Norfolk will be ending months of hard work on a high note on 27 January, when they perform live with world-class orchestra Britten Sinfonia.
Tickets are selling fast for the Crescendo concert at Poringland Community Centre where pupils from Framingham Earl High, Rockland St Mary Primary and Surlingham Primary School will premiere their anthem for the Norfolk Village Games.
The concert forms part of a creative project co-produced by Orchestras Live, working with South Norfolk Council as part of their Olympic year celebrations.
South Norfolk Council's Deputy Leader Councillor Martin Wilby said:
“I have been incredibly impressed by the young people’s talent, enthusiasm and dedication and I am delighted we can help them develop their potential by giving them this opportunity to work alongside such highly acclaimed musicians. I can’t wait to hear their anthem for the Village Games.”
Stuart Bruce, Partnership Manager of Orchestras Live, the national development organisation for professional orchestral music, said:
“This is the first project of its kind in South Norfolk, and I am thrilled that so many young people have had the inspirational experience of working with instrumentalists and other artists from one of the country’s leading orchestras.”
Pupils have worked closely with a team of musicians led by composer James Redwood, and over two workshops have written both the lyrics and the music for the new anthem, which will be performed at the final of the Games on Sunday 15 July 2012.
Teenagers from Framingham Earl High will be performing alongside Britten Sinfonia musicians, while the younger pupils will form a choir. The concert will also include a selection of classical music chosen by the pupils.
Miles Neville Director of Music for Framingham Earl High School said:
“We want all students to enjoy music and feel inspired. This project has demonstrated the great amount of talent our young people have and I hope many students will go on and enjoy music throughout their lives.”
Another group of High School students have been helping to run and promote the concert through the Bright Sparks project. Run by Creative Arts East with the support of South Norfolk Council, it has given youngsters the chance to experience all aspects of event management.
In December, students visited the Council offices where they met the Marketing and Communications team and found out everything they needed to know about promoting the Crescendo Concert.
Year 10 student Ryan Findly, 15, said:
“I never really thought much about the Olympics before, now I have been involved in this process I will appreciate watching the 2012 Games and feel I know a lot more about what goes on behind the scenes in planning events.”
Tickets for the evening cost £6 for adults and £4 for children from Bright Sparks on: 01508 491527, or email: jack.harris@framinghamearl.net
