What is Beacon status?

The Beacon Scheme identifies excellence and innovation in local government. It is much more than just a badge, however. The scheme exists to share good practice so that best value authorities can learn from each other and deliver high quality services to all.

Phil Woolas, Minister for Local Government: "The fact is that the best of Local Government rivals, and sometimes beats, the best of business. We are on the edge of a technology led revolution in local services. These awards shine a light on the coming changes. The Beacon Scheme continues to provide a highly effective way of both celebrating and sharing excellence and the Beacons announced today will be a valuable force in helping to improve public services across the country.

"Beacons encourage strong, efficient local leadership which is essential if local government is to continue delivering successfully services for our communities."

Learning from our work

Beacon status means that both councils will be held up as model examples of how local authorities should work with young people. And local councils embarking on similar attempts to reach and engage with young people will be urged to go to both ourselves and the county council for help and advice.
