South Norfolk Council Leader Vivienne Clifford-Jackson has expressed her concern at the announcement of 200 job losses by Lotus, and has pledged that the council "will do everything we can within our powers to help and offer advice."

She welcomed the announcement by Lotus management of approval for its five-year business plan, which Lotus say will mean the development of three new car models.

In the announcement, Group Lotus CEO Mike Kimberley blamed the job losses on a recent downturn in car sales in its key US market, brought about by oil price and interest rate rises, and what it described as the "soft" UK market.

Councillor Clifford-Jackson said:

"We are deeply concerned at the news of the job losses today, especially coming less than a week after the job losses announced by Norwich Union.

"We will do everything we can within our powers to help and offer advice to Lotus.

"This announcement demonstrates once again the fragility of global economic markets and the real need for developing local initiatives like the Hethel Engineering Centre.

"The strong support we have given to businesses in South Norfolk has helped in part to soften the inevitable blows of these problems."
