Food safety checks boost Royal Norfolk Show
Released on 27 June 2006
The food hygiene team are the unsung heroes of the show
Sue Nixon, Senior Environmental Health Officer
Food hygiene inspectors will be visiting hundreds of stalls at the Royal Norfolk Show this week.
They will be there to ensure high standards and to try and make sure no one's show is ruined by food poisoning.
South Norfolk Council will have a team of five inspectors checking more than 30 catering contractors as well as a huge number of stalls which offer food to visitors.
Thousands of visitors will eat at the show, ranging from show Members and visitors who will be tucking in at many of the more than 800 stalls, to HRH Prince Edward himself, who will be trying the local produce.
South Norfolk Council's Senior Environmental Health Officer Sue Nixon said:
"The food hygiene team are the unsung heroes of the show. Most people who attend take it for granted that what they are eating has been stored, prepared, cooked and served to high standards.
"That doesn't happen by accident, it's the result of hard work by our team beforehand and inspections on the day. The work we do is essential if people are to enjoy their time and not come away with illnesses or a bad experience.
"That means our team of five will be spot-checking virtually every stall and marquee selling everything from candy floss to full set-piece meals."
Two months ago, everyone involved in offering food at the show received a letter and key advice leaflet on how to avoid the problems which lead to food poisoning.
It also features a warning about important changes to food legislation which will affect those preparing and offering food to the thousands of visitors this year.
