A tale of two Davids

I'm a bit gutted as they say, but business is business, and these planning applicants deserve and will get our full, professional attention
Councillor David Gudgeon, Chair, East Area Planning Committee
As millions gather round TV sets in pubs and homes across England tomorrow, spare a quick thought for those gathered at Loddon Middle School to decide whether barns should be turned into eight holiday units!
By the time Captain David Beckham and the England team kick off their bid to win a second round place in the World Cup by beating Trinidad and Tobago, South Norfolk Councillor David Gudgeon and his fellow members of the East Area Planning Committee will be only half an hour into their agenda.
Having said that, the Wheatacre barn conversion is one of only four items to consider, so some of the Councillors and the public gathered at the meeting could be home for at least the second half.
Councillor Gudgeon, who is chair of the Committee and has been trying to juggle his Councillor commitments with watching World Cup games, said:
"I'm a bit gutted as they say, but business is business, and these planning applicants deserve and will get our full, professional attention.
"I guess we might hear what the score is from any members of the public who come along."
Pressed on what the score might be, Councillor Gudgeon threw his usual politician's caution to the wind, and said:
"Two - nil to England."
