This week sees the start of the tenth national celebration of British architecture and South Norfolk Council is marking the anniversary with an exhibition on how we seek to improve the quality of design in the built environment.
The Council has also chosen Architecture Week to launch the 6th year of its own Design Awards.
Architecture Week 2006 runs from 16 to 25 June and is organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Arts Council. Organisers have been encouraging as many events as possible around the theme of 'the power of 10' to promote and raise awareness of architecture among the public.
The Council's exhibition is one of around 80 events taking place in the region. It is called Celebrating Contemporary Architecture in South Norfolk, and is open to the public during office hours at the Council's headquarters in Long Stratton.
David Edleston, the Council's Conservation and Design Architect said:
"This is a unique insight into the way we work with others to improve the quality of design in the built environment through the planning process. People will have an opportunity to see illustrations of 10 contemporary buildings in the District.
"There will also be a review of our Design Award Scheme and we are using the exhibition to launch and invite nominations for the 2006 awards which have to be submitted by 1 September."
There are four categories in the awards:
- new building: This can include any individual building, or a group of buildings on a single site.
- extension to an existing building
- conservation: repair, restoration or conversion of an existing
building
- landscape design: planting or hard landscape scheme either in association with a new development or a stand alone project, for example, improving a public open space or a play area.
The Council's website at www.south-norfolk.gov.uk has details of the awards and nomination forms.
The East region brochure listing all the Architecture Week events also features a stunning picture of Whitlingham Water Activity Centre on its front cover. Further details can be obtained from www.architectureweek.org.uk.
