Council tax reductions for disabled people

Summary

Your council tax bill may be reduced if your home has certain facilities for meeting the needs of a person with a disability - whether it is an adult or a child - who is living in the property.

Further information

You can get a disability reduction if your home has certain adaptations that are specifically for a disabled resident’s needs.

These are:

  • a room (other than a kitchen or bathroom) mainly used by the disabled person, or;
  • an extra kitchen or bathroom required for meeting the disabled person’s needs, or;
  • enough floor space to allow a wheelchair to be used indoors.

If you are entitled, your bill will be reduced to that of the next lowest valuation band. If your property is in Band A and you are entitled to a disability reduction, your bill will be reduced by an amount equal to 1/6th of the Band A charge.

If you feel you or someone you know of would qualify for this reduction, a visiting officer would need to visit the property to assess any entitlement and complete an application form. Please get in touch with us, our contact details are below.
