Dragon's Den
Summary
Are you the next James Dyson, Sir Richard Branson or Sir Alan Sugar? Do you run your business from home? Have you had an idea for a new business but feel you can’t afford that first step?
Have you answered yes to any of the above? If so this is the opportunity you have been waiting for!
We have teamed up with Business Link East, Norfolk Rural Business Advice Services (NRBAS) and The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) to offer one lucky company free office space and business support for 1 year.
The lucky business will be selected following a Dragon’s Den style competition. Prospective businesses are being invited to apply in writing by 9 May and the shortlisted eight will be invited to present to a panel of Dragons on 19 May 2010.

About the prize
- The office is a single room at Loddon Business Centre free, including business rates included.
- Business Link East will give the winner a dedicated number for business support as well as develop an appropriate package on meeting the winner and assessing their needs.
- Norfolk Rural Business Advice Service will provide one year's business coaching.
- The Federation of Small Businesses are providing one year's free membership. Membership includes numerous legal benefits such as support with employment disputes, tax protection and much more.
To enter the competition please complete the South Norfolk Council’s Dragon’s Den expression of Interest form and accompany it with a business plan. Visit the Business Link website for help with writing a business plan.
The closing date is 9 May 2010.
The presentation
On 19 May 2010 short listed businesses will be invited to present to our Dragons. Here is a sample of the sorts of questions the dragons may ask you...
- Have you considered how the current economic climate is going to affect your business?
- Do you know your Market?
- Have you got a Marketing Strategy?
- Have you provided a cash flow analysis or previous years' accounts if you have them?
- Have you got the funding and finance you need to get started and remain sustainable?
- Will you be or do you already employ staff?
- What are your overheads?
- Your background/previous experience?
- How have you considered the environment in your plans?
Eligibility
- Applicants must be 18 years or older at the time of application.
- Applicants must not currently occupy commercial premises.
- The competition is not open to South Norfolk Council employees and their families or anyone professionally associated with the competition.
- Entries must be submitted on an official application.
- The business activity must be the prime or intended to be the prime source of income for the applicant. Hobbies or secondary activities are not eligible.
- The business should not be a subsidiary of, or have subsidiaries, or be part of a group of businesses.
- The business should be legitimate and legal with the intention to fulfil all appropriate statutory and legal requirements,
- Applicants must be able to attend the final event (19 May 2010 at South Norfolk Council, Long Stratton) and deliver a presentation to a judging panel.
- Applicants must be available for PR and marketing activities during the competition and during the prize period,
Proposed Terms and Conditions
By entering this competition you agree to these rules:
- The Judges decision is final.
- Winners cannot sub let or assign the premises.
- Winners cannot manage/run additional businesses.
- Applications must be received by the deadline.
- The prize will be available for the 12 months following the date the winner is selected.
- There are no cash alternatives.
- Only one applicant per person/business.
- The prize includes, the office, services (excluding telephone and broadband line rental and usage), business rates and building insurance. Any additional office costs incurred must be met by the winner.
- Winners must sign and adhere to the Council's business tenancy agreement, which can be downloaded above.
- The winner will be offered a tenancy without security of tenure.
- Applicants must meet eligibility criteria.
- Should the winner vacate the premises during or after the prize period no rebate will be provided.
- The Council will not accept any liability for any loss, damage or injury suffered by any applicant entering this competition.
- The Council retains the rights to disqualify applicants from winning if it has reasonable grounds to suspect that the applicant is in breach of the eligibility terms and conditions or undertaking unlawful activities.
- The Council may cancel or suspend the competition or amend the rules without notice by posting changes on the website.
- Winners will be required to have public liability insurance.
