Business rates deferral scheme
Summary
The Government announced new legislation that came into force on 31 July 2009 to allow ratepayers to spread the increase in their 2009/10 business rate charge over three years.
This applies to the 2009/10 business rate bill only.
Further information
Prior to 31st March 2010 a ratepayer who still had some of their rate bill for 2009/10 to pay and had not lost the right to pay by instalments could have applied to defer some of their bill.
If the bill had increased as a result of the end of the transitional relief period it was possible to defer 60% of the transitional relief amount allowed in 2008/09 from the 2009/10 bill.
If you did not qualify for transitional relief you could have still deferred 3% of your total 2009/10 bill.
Applications were accepted up to 31st March 2010 provided some of the bill was left to pay. If you had less than 3% left to pay you could have deferred the remaining balance.
The amount that has been deferred from 2009/10 you will pay half back in 2010/2011 and half back in 2011/2012 as well as your full bill for those years. Your rates bill for the next two years will include details of these amounts you have put off paying and need to pay, and your payments will be adjusted in line with this.
