Norfolk Open Link (wireless network)

Summary

Norfolk Open Link is the first community wireless network in the UK to provide free internet access to everyone.  The Norfolk Open Link network operates across parts of South Norfolk and Norwich, and coverage across the whole district will follow.

This network is not a replacement for the usual broadband services typically provided over a telephone line. As such, connections are limited to one-hour sessions. Find out about broadband for your business.

About the Norfolk Open Link project

Norfolk Open Link is a two year pilot project developed by Norfolk County Council with South Norfolk Council. It runs from March 2006 until March 2008.

It aims to see if public sector organisations e.g. health, education, police and public transport can benefit from using wireless based technology. This network is also available to businesses and the general public.

Connecting to the network

You can connect a wireless enabled device such as a laptop or PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) to the internet for free when you are within 300 metres of a Norfolk Open Link wireless access point. The location of these access points can be found at the official Norfolk Open Link website [external link].

Connections are largely dependent on there being 'line-of-sight' between your device and a given access point. Obstacles such as buildings and trees dramatically reduce the signal received by your device.
