Starting a new business
Summary
We have produced a set of guidance notes for people thinking about starting a new business - such as opening a B&B, kennels or a hairdressers - which gives useful advice on how you should proceed, and some of the agencies you might need to contact. We also provide a 'One Stop Shop' service for small businesses to give advice before you submit a formal planning application for your business premises.
How to use the One Stop Shop service
- Open the questionnaire from the ‘Downloads’ box below.
- Print out a copy of the form.
- Fill in the form.
- Send the form to:

One Stop Shop Service
This service is for small businesses and will allow you to get advice before you send a formal planning application in.
You need to print and fill in the pre-application form about your proposal. This form can be downloaded from the 'Printable forms' section above. Once we receive the form we will contact the other sections likely to be involved within the Council such as the Highways Authority who will respond to the details you have given.
This service takes about four weeks and provides advice at an initial stage only, but can be useful prior to submitting a formal application. You should contact other agencies outside the council separately.
