What we are doing to help

The Council is doing its best to help people and businesses in South Norfolk to deal with the impact of the recession, and we have put in place a number of initiatives -

  • We have removed parking fees in our market towns for the first hour of use, to help shoppers and traders.
  • We have a successful campaign to save our pubs through the downturn, including a Pub of the Year award, which has generated considerable interest and business for the pubs involved.
  • We have introduced different periods for payment of council tax and business rates. Customers can now pay weekly, fortnightly or monthly, and over 12 months instead of 10.
  • We allow additional discretionary rate relief for shops, post offices and pubs in rural settlements of under 3,000 people.
  • We can help small businesses with business rate relief.
  • We were the first local authority in the country to use the Mortgage Rescue Scheme, to help homeowners facing repossession, and have three packages in place already.
  • We have a strong progamme of events to help boost tourism and visitor numbers, to increase spend locally, and to give a good quality experience for those holidaying here.

We work closely with people or businesses faced with the possibility of closure or redundancy, and can provide information and advice on packages of support. We want to make sure our economy is as strong as it can be and well placed to pick up quickly when the recovery starts.

As well as support for existing businesses, we have invested in areas such as Loddon Business Centre, and have developments planned in areas such as Norwich Research Park and Hethel which will provide good quality jobs over the next few years.

If you are a resident or a business facing financial difficulties, we are here to help. Use the links below to see what is on offer, and where you can go for help.
