Housing & council tax benefit
Council tax & housing benefit is for people on a low income to help meet the cost of rent and council tax. Benefits are means tested so the money you earn and the money you have saved, together with your household circumstances, will affect the amount of help you may be entitled to.
Important! Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit has changed
Many families are missing out on benefits, which can help towards household bills. Even if you've been turned down in the past, you might be able to get help now.
From 2 November 2009, Child Benefit is ignored as part of your income for the housing and council tax benefit calculation. We already ignore Child Maintenance when calculating your income for Benefit purposes.
There is also good news for people aged over 60. The amount of capital you can have before it affects your entitlement to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit has been raised to £10,000.
